GUI grounding improved up to 9.3 times by cropping toward the target instead of clicking directly

AspireAI community · arXiv
A vision-language model can recognise a button in a dense high-resolution interface and still click the wrong spot, and most GUI grounding methods pass through that inaccurate first guess. GUI-Lens makes the model look again instead. It extracts OCR text and detected UI components from the screenshot and hands their positions to the model as coordinate references, then lets the VLM choose the region and scale of the next view; that crop is enlarged and fed back in, repeating until the target is pinned down. Proposed crops and clicks are checked against the instruction throughout, and the final local position is mapped back to original screen coordinates. Across five GUI grounding benchmarks and six general-purpose base models, grounding accuracy improved consistently, reaching up to 9.3 times the accuracy of direct grounding on ScreenSpot-Pro. The limitation is cost: every extra look is another forward pass with a larger image, so the accuracy gain is paid for in latency and tokens per grounding call.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
