On character-level text grounding, Claude Fable 5 hit 69.6% while the best specialist GUI model hit 25.8%

AspireAI community · arXiv (cs.CV, cs.CL) — NeurIPS 2026 AABA4ET Workshop
Most GUI grounding benchmarks test clicking buttons and checkboxes, so PointerBench adds 1,500 screenshot-instruction pairs across three harder settings: pinpointing a sub-element in a spreadsheet, finding one character inside long-text documents, and grounding clicks across 100 professional applications. The result is a large gap between frontier and specialist models on the hardest setting. Claude Fable 5 reached 69.6% on the text-grounding split and GPT-5.6 Sol 53.4%, but the leading native specialist, UI-Venus-2-9B, managed only 25.8% — even though it averaged 54.5% across the whole benchmark. The paper argues there is substantial headroom in fine-grained grounding for both groups. The limitation is that it is a workshop paper and grounding accuracy on static screenshots does not by itself measure end-to-end task completion.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
