Baseten's Base Labs released two models that answer with probabilities instead of writing sentences

AspireAI community · Baseten
*Baseten's research lab released two models that answer with probabilities instead of sentences.* elephant-1 (9B) and mammoth-1 (27B) are post-trained from Qwen3.5, MIT-licensed and open on Hugging Face. Give the model some context plus yes/no, multiple-choice or scored questions, and it returns a calibrated probability for every option in one forward pass. Nothing is generated, so there is no prose to parse. It is built for routing: ticket triage, spam filtering, jailbreak guardrails, choosing between a small model and a frontier one. elephant-1 scored 62.65 on the Jev Decision Index, best under 15B and 8th of 208. The 27B mammoth-1 took 1st at 71.24. Caveat: both indexes are vendor-run. Free API week ends Oct 27. https://huggingface.co/baselabs/elephant-1

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
