ERASE defended against prompt injection in images, audio and video while keeping the useful content around the injection

AspireAI community · arXiv
Multimodal indirect prompt injection hides malicious instructions inside external media that also carries information the user needs, so blocking the attack often means destroying the task along with it. ERASE closes the gap by erasing the injected region in place: modality-appropriate blank content replaces the injection while the surrounding media is preserved, and a student model reading the attacked media learns from a frozen base model reading that erased view through token-level feedback on its own rollouts. Across image, audio and video at two model sizes, ERASE recorded near-zero observed attack success on the evaluated benchmark while keeping task utility close to the undefended clean-input level. On 3B audio it reached 60.1 percent attacked-input accuracy against ARGUS's 33.1 percent, within 0.5 points of the undefended clean level, and injection dependence fell from 6.26 to 0.0095. The limitation is honest and specific: the code is not yet public, it was promised upon acceptance, and the near-zero attack success is an observed rate on the evaluated benchmark rather than a proof of robustness.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
Research
One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
