Microsoft built full synthetic companies to evaluate Copilot, since real enterprise data cannot legally be used for testing

AspireAI community · Microsoft Research
Microsoft's Industry Evaluation Data Generation Platform creates full-scale synthetic enterprise environments, each an isolated 'tenant' with its own users, data and configurations, grounded in public sources including O*NET occupational data, online job postings and SEC filings, so that evaluation can be thorough without touching customer data. Three environments were built (pharmaceutical, capital markets, and IT/software) that simulate time-evolving organizations, and a six-stage automated pipeline turns generic query templates into industry-specific questions validated for accuracy and uniqueness, with quality assessed on structural fidelity, contextual relevance, behavioral realism and content safety. Microsoft reports automating dataset creation away from a multi-day manual process, with an estimated 100,000 dollars saved per evaluation dataset and 300,000 dollars in total project savings. The limitation: these are Microsoft's own synthetic environments, and the dollar figures are the company's own estimates rather than independently audited numbers.

THE BIG PICTURE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
