Baseten shipped a 2B open-weight model that answers yes-or-no with a confidence score instead of writing text.
joey-1 returns the decision and a calibrated probability in a single forward pass, so there is nothing for your code to parse. On the average 2,000-token request Baseten measures 20 ms end to end, about 2.5x faster than its 9B sibling elephant-1, at $0.01 per million tokens.
The weights are on Hugging Face under MIT and ungated: one safetensors file that a real range request pulls bytes from. The model card puts joey-1 at 63.30 on the Jev Decision Index public split, #37 of 230 and top score under 4B.
The honest limit: the strongest-under-3B claim rests on internal tests Baseten has not published, and the 20 ms figure is its own.

Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
