Together AI's GPU clusters now auto-repair a failed node, and the design choice is that the platform picks the fix while the customer decides whether and when it runs

AspireAI community · Together AI
At cluster scale an Xid error, a double-bit ECC error or a flapping InfiniBand link can stall a distributed training job, and the hard part is everything between detecting the fault and getting a healthy node again. Together AI published the mechanics of its automatic node remediation: health checks detect the fault from both sides of the hypervisor, a policy layer decides what repair is attempted, a customer-supplied detector can be plugged in, and an escalation ladder of repair actions is gated per Xid code. The machine re-validates itself after repair, and the design deliberately leaves the whether-and-when with the customer so a person stays in the loop where it matters. The honest limit: this is a vendor engineering write-up describing their own system, not an independent evaluation.

THE BIG PICTURE
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

One distance function matched sparse-autoencoder features across layers and compressed feature circuits into supernodes
Two sparse-autoencoder analyses have resisted scaling: matching semantically similar features across layers, and compressing large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes. This paper argues both are the same underlying problem, estimating semantic distances between SAE features that sit on different activation manifolds. Its representation treats each feature not as a single decoder vector but as an activation-weighted distribution over the hidden states expressing it, projects those distributions into a shared reference space, and compares them with Wasserstein distance. The representation is proved invariant to activation rescaling and stable under perturbation, and recovers true matches under finite-sample margin conditions. Empirically it outperformed decoder-vector and LLM-based baselines and captured subtle functional distinctions between related features, and it compressed large feature circuits into interpretable supernodes automatically. The limitation is that this is interpretability tooling: the paper demonstrates better feature matching and circuit compression, not that downstream interpretability claims become more accurate.
